Just returned from an excellent week sailing from Dunstaffnage - got as far as Loch Maddy with very little motoring, but quite a fair bit of sun - have never had to use block five days out of seven before. Most memorable was probably the sighting of sharks three times, after only one seen in the past thirty odd years on the west coast. Could have been the same ones each time of course, but have others noticed them this season? Bit late for baskers in middle of August I understand, and sea seemed cool on immersion. (deliberate) Brr......

Saw 3 sharks this year around Pabbay and Mingulay, definately 3 seperate sharks .They do say for every shark on the surface there are probablya dozen in close proximity below. Saw more sharks last year, N Skye ,near Dunvegan ,and one close in to the moorings on Coll. Also saw more in Irish Sea ,around Isle of Man and Ardglass in N Ireland. Previous to this had only seen 3 sharks in 20 yrs sailing these waters!! Check out the marine conservation agency site as you can report sightings there and they will keep you informed on movements.

Having assumed the sharks in Scottish waters were generally vegetarian, we did wonder about the pair cruising in Canna Harbour round a drying rock which was well garnished with tasty seal pups. Too distant though for our inexperienced eyes to identify the type.

OK to be specific these were 3 individual Basking sharks ranging in length from 20 to 25 foot. (a bit big for tope!!)
