Shamrock Quay

Mmmm... I just moved from SQ (I assume we're talking SQ on the Itchen in Southampton)... it depends on your level of experience (mine by the way is calibrating the lower end of the newbie scale)... the tide rips through SQ at springs and can be the cause of many a matrimonial shouting match at times. So it helps (well folk like me anyway) to arrive/depart at certain states of the tide. The biggest issue to most 'residents' is the scrap metal reclamation yard just up river that deposits a fine layer of dust and metal particles all over everything (and I mean everything)... I had a brand new boat in there for one week and already there are tiny rust marks on the deck. On the positive side, it's central to Southampton, friendly staff, great shower/washroom facilties, and perhaps most of all it's surrounded by small engineering works which means that pretty much everything can be attended to without having to travel.

Kemps just over the river is a little over half the price, and has more 'character' which may or may not appeal.

no connection, but I have recently moved away having spent a happy couple of years there

I'm based at Shamrock and have been for the past six seasons. MDL and the Berth Holders Association are actively monitoring and working on the dust situation which, as others have said, is improved of late.

The river does flow fast and you do need to be aware of it but it's only really a problem from 2.5 hours to half an hour before low water. Once you are aware it's a great training ground for ferry walking. We now come and go at all states of the tide. Berths closer to the bank really don't have any problem at all so long as you ferry walk down the aisle in the critical two hours.

It's one of the better value marinas in the Solent and it's also a full service boat yard with all trades on site and in many cases a choice of supplier for each trade.

The chandlery runs a Boat Owner's scheme which offers an annual credit voucher depending on how much you have spent in the previous year - usually pays for all my anti-fouling!

The MDL staff and the staff of the companies I deal with are all very friendly. It's very easy to get in and out of by road once you know the route and is probably the Solent marina with the quickest access off the bottom of the M3.

We reckon on a little over an hour to get to Calshot but, wind permitting, we always start sailing from the entrance to the Itchen which is only 20 minutes away. Coming home we very often sail right up to the marina. Southampton Water is pretty sheltered and it's often possible to have a nice sail when it would be quite unpleasant in the Solent.

The Berth Holder's Association is pretty active and organises about four/five events a season.

All in all, highly recommended. PM me and we can hook up on the phone and I can endeavour to answer any questions you may have.

Regards,

Ed
