This afternoon on my Searay 220 I got myself into a very shallow stretch of water at low tide. Suddenly the boat was not quite touching the bottom but easing over some thick muck and I could tell the engine was starting to labor a bit. I'm still a relatively new boater. But I could see the engine was kicking up a lot of gunk off the bottom. So I tried raising the trim a bit to get the propellor a little higher in the water. Anyway, I'm not quite sure the precise order of events but it seemed like the engine was basically laboring kciking through very silty, muddy water. And all of sudden the alarm went off saying the engine was overheating. I immediately cut the engine to let it cool off. And let the boat drift until we were in a bit more water. Anyway, I tried once to restart the engine but it was still hot. I turned it off. Waited a bit longer. And this time it had cooled down enough for the alarm stop coming on. I watched it closely and the temp remained stable. Long story short, we got back onto deeper water and made our way the few miles back to home. The engine worked fine on the way home and all the gauges and temps etc were all stable. So all basically as though nothing had happened. Was on the water for probably a couple more hours after this happened -- a mix of cruising at 15-20 mph, 5mph on some very calm water and the anchoring a couple times.
Should I assume I got the engine off in time and it's fine or should I be concerned that some lasting damage was done? And is there anything I should look for in terms of something that could be wrong?
