just had boat hauled out and found that the engineer is claiming my new shaft seals are weeping because the shaft itself is pitted around the seal joint.....ouch

Would you put it back and accept a slightly wet seal ( not even a drip) or pay £1500 for new shafts but a perfect watertight seal as claimed by the seal manufacturer

powersalt. I have a similar dilemma.
What type of shaft seal do You have?
Is it a traditional gland packing type gismo, or a more modern ,forget it and leave it system?
Does Your system normally stay dry and not drip?
Sorry to question Your question!
You mention Your "New shaft seals are weeping".
Did the Old Shaft Seals weep?
Bloody H more questions!
Answer My questions and We may get an answer.

If you have room you can fit a spacer between the gearbox and shaft flanges, this will send the shaft back by the spacer thickness and put the seal on good new steel.

sorry, so shattered after work, fell asleep last night. Anyway to answer the points:
I have always had problems with the traditional gland packing and really got fed up with water always in the bilge. So last year I had fitted the tides marine shaft seal that claim to be absolutley water tight. For me they were a vast improvement but they still were weeping a bit. The fitting engineer agreed there should be nothing and so true to there work, when the boat was hauled out they set to work to replace the seal. Thats when they found slight indentation on the shaft caused by the old stuffing box. Its a great improvement even with the weeping which in perspctive is only a drip every 6 hrs or so. Im have so much better peace of mind last year and would recommend them again.

As for building them back up: it would have to go to a specialist on the mainland and sometimes the heat can break the shaft so I am told. I dont have the time

Your idea macnorton is good, thanks I will ask if thats possible, but he did mumble something about trying to re possition the shaft/ gland to avoid the spot but the shafts movement in and out of gear would mean it cant be avoided.

IF any one wants more information on seals let me know
