I have Varirop propeller on my boat with a now faulty Shaftlok system to lock the shaft and enable the prop to fold. This system was on the boat as new.

Since it is now faulty does anyone see a reason the engine can't be turn off in gear to lock the prop shaft like they do with Maxi props?

The engine is a Perkins M90.

Thoughts?

Depends on the gearbox, not the engine. If it has a hydraulic box, locking it in gear will not help, although you can stop it in gear and the prop will fold. However the shaft will still rotate. The shaft lock was probably fitted to ensure the shaft stays fixed. There is debate as to whether a folding or feathered prop stays that way when sailing, but a shaft lock ensures it does.
