Changing our shaft seal on surveyors advice, it's currently got a Manecraft Deep Sea Seal EM5, our stern tube OD is 55mm (actually 55.5mm max with a small lip) and shaft size is 30mm.

Wanted to install a Radice or Volvo type for simplicity but for a 30mm shaft they specify max 48mm tube. Marine Tides Series One have a 2 1/4" option although that's a couple mm too big, would it clamp down enough? Maybe I could put a rubber spacer on to pad it out?

The DSS seems to be the only one spec'd to fit at 51 - 60mm, maybe why it was installed in the first place.

Anyone know of a seal that might fit?

Because of really poor access - even a gorilla with arm extentions could not reach it - I have successfully extended the Orbitrade rubber stuffing box I fitted to our Island Packet SP Cruiser.

I used a GRP exhaust connector tube from ASAP, 8 inches long. A new cuff was used to join to the OE stern tube and the new seal affixed to the GRP extention tube.

No reason at all why a custom made extender cannot be easily made to adapt to your requirements, in metal or GRP. Tube diameter one end, seal diameter the other. Providing, of course, there is space to do it.

On a previous boat I epoxied an aluminium sleeve to the stern tube to bring the diameter up to what I needed to get a Volvo seal fitted.

What sort of stern tube is it? If it is detachable then you may be able to get it turned down to 48mm. Suggest you talk to Lake Engineering about the possibilities. The sell all types of seals and have the facilities to machine bits. I potentially have a similar issue and will be going to them for solution. avoid the DSS. Radice is the "best" solution, followed by Tides in my view. I prefer lip seals to face seals.

Thanks good ideas! will definitely contact Lake for their advice.

I wish people would put some indication of where they are situated in their "about" details, along with boat info. If you were very close to me I could turn that down for you while you waited & it would probably only cost you a "thankyou very much" & possibly a beer, if we ever met again in a marina somewhere.

Simple candidate for turning down - and good offer if you are in the east of the realm. I am lucky that Lake are 10 minutes drive from home - although their rates are not as good as Daydream believers!
