I'm just at the point of buying an Ambassador rope cutter when a small point comes to mind......as the boat has no fixed thrust brg ie Aquadrive or similar then the thrust is taken on the engine mounts ....which been flexible give to some extent...so the prop shaft moves to a certain extent when in either ahead or astern.....looking at marks on the shaft near the gland it would seem to be about 8 to 10mm overall.....how does this relate to the rope cutter blades and clearence therein ???.....am I missing the point here?...is this amount of axial movement so very different to the norm?......or what?

Hi

I have fitted several Amdassador cutters to ALbin Vegas without aquadrives etc and the instructions when fitting point out about the axial movement and allow for it, dont worry. If still in doubt then phone Robin at Ambassador Marine as he is very helpful and certainly knows what he is talking about.

Allowing for movement...

The fitting which stops the Stripper's fixed cutter from rotating is designed to allow the shaft to move axially. The main thing to be aware of is that there must be enough clearance for the shaft to move after the Stripper is fitted. If there isn't, you need to get Ambassador to supply a spacer which you insert between the gearbox output and the shaft connector. These spacers are nicely machined and are very easy to fit. There's a diagram on the Ambassador website which shows their recommended minimum clearances.
