Shaft anodes

If it is say 40% worn do you leave it on and add another new one or always replace it.

Is there any advantage in having lots of anodes or is sufficient - sufficient!!

I'd replace it because Sod's Law says that if you don't then it will go loose and rattle or disappear in the hot summer weather and you'll lose half your prop. For the sake of a few quid........

Leave it on and add another. I use three at a time.

Only used these things once - after a while the anode rotted loose and began to hammer away when under power. Had to find a quiet place and go over the side to toss the dammed thing. If you have to install shaft annodes, make sure they are the type with sprung fasteners, or you too will be over the side....

I hate shaft anodes, always seem to unbalance the shaft.

What's wrong with a decent sized hull anode properly wired up?

Do you really need shaft anodes if as TheBoatman says you have a good hull one wired in?

Hi,

my Sadler 26 has JUST one shaft anode and no hull anode.
This setup seemed to work perfect since the last 23 years.
I installed a new MGDuff anode this spring and it was worn down to ~30% at the lift out two weeks ago.
No rattling, no vibrations, no problems..... just fine.

So why all the hassle with an hull anode? /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I second that on a Beneteau First 26 never any probs if put close ish to the hul.

No problems with shaft anodes but IF they do come loose / worn the tell tale sound is a high pitched rattle. Don't ask, I know from experience. Either tighten under water or fit a new one. Must admit I tend to extend slipping time to max and hope if I have to install a new anode it is either time to haul out or SUMMER!

Not sure whats wrong with hull anodes but Jeanneau (either factory or commissioning yard) fit a shat anode possible as it nearest the prop. I also had a large hull anode fitted but not sure its necessary.

As I had a lot of trouble with Volvo folding props and loss of anodes on a previous boat I tend to try and be safe and over - anode!! Thats why I ask the question.

As boat is in for sometimes 56 weeks in the Hamble and has a lovely 4 blade varipitch feathering propellor I would hate to have inadequate protection!

As an aside - Tried ploughing my way up the Medina to Folly at low spring tide last Saturday. Finally gave up but would not even dream of trying without the grunt astern that a feathering propellor gives.

Add a new one and they will both degrade but a a slower rate than a single anode.
