I am replacing the prop shaft and fitting a Pythondrive. At the moment there is no shaft anode and no disernable corrosion either.Should I bother fitting a shaft anode? What do people think?

Assuming you will still have the same prop on the same shaft then no if there is no reason to fit one don't. They are often recommended as a precautionary measure. It sells lots of anodes. A bronze prop on a stainless shaft should not need one.

I assume you do not have a hull anode protecting the stern gear. If you do and it is fitted because it has been found necessary and it is connected to the stern gear via the engine and gear box then you must ensure you take what ever steps are necessary to keep a good low resistance electrical connection from anode to prop.

Not a technical answer, but you could try fitting one this year and if it erodes it is probably doing something useful.

[/ QUOTE ] Not so.

If you fit a zinc anode next to copper alloy propeller it will waste away regardless of whether or not it is doing anything useful. That's just plain basic electrochemistry at work!
