I remember finding a uk site selling shackles of a special type that fitted over/through the chain , to use instead of a chain hook....

can't find it again after much searching.

Can anyone enlighten me?

Thanks

Wichard (French) make two types. Problem is you need to fit them to the chain on deck whereas the hook can be attached or released over the bow roller outboard if needed, so you need to make sure they will pass over the bow roller both ways.

thanks : I looked at <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.wichard.com/catalogue/catalogue_en.php?FAMILLE=1.0>wichard's site</A> but couldn't see them there.

The force4 ones look like <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.force4.co.uk/acatalog/840146.gif>this</A>

Take your point re flexibility of use.

Wichard do make two types I believe, one like the one shown and the other similar but locks on the chain with a spring loaded plunger (one handed operation), they are in all the French chandlery catalogues but mine are on board. We use chain hooks for attaching anchor snubbers and I thought the shackles would be easier to use, not falling off as the chain is eased out as sometimes happens with hooks. However the shackles would need to be fixed to the chain inboard of the bow roller, OK I guess if they will pass over it without jamming?

They are also referred to as chain grippers (used to be Kong I believe) and can be used to attach a second anchor to a chain. The shackle part fits completely across a link rather than through the link.

<A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.osculati.co.uk/catalogue.asp> Osculati </A> market them or search Google for other sources.

Be careful about the "main de fer" from Wichard..
Its resistance is much lower (about half) that the one of the chain it will be used to...

Hi Alain

I don't use one but I had looked at the possibilty, however only as a means of attaching the snubber line to the main anchor chain, where currently we use a proper S/S chain hook. I believe the Wichard one is intended to be used for attaching a second chain and anchor to back up the main anchor, is that correct?

No sorry, the "main de fer" from Wichard is designed to put a snubber or spring line to a anchor chain, but the model designed for a 10 mm chain (breaking load 5000 kg) has only a resistance of 2500 kg..
