I am renewing my anchor hardware with a new 30m of 8 mm chain I am sourcing some tested shackles to join it to anchor so what is the max pin diameter I can fit through 8mm short link chain.

Thanks

From memory 10mm should fit. I just try different sizes from my shackle bag until I get one that's a good fit then measure the pin.
Incidentally, last time I tried, at a commercial fishing chandlers, the smallest tested galv shackles I could get were 12mm.

I have a short length here. 9mm is the largest diameter pin that would fit through it.

However my own anchor chain has large end links which accommodate a significantly larger shackle. That is useful because otherwise I would need two shackles in order to connect to the anchor,,. One to fit the chain and a larger one to fit the anchor.

In the tensile tests shown on my website all the shackles were 10 mm and all the chain was 8 mm. In a couple of cases, most notably the large coloured pin ones, they would not fit and we used a larger shackle. If you want the best available, source a Wichard 17/4 PH one.

If your 8mm chain is G3 then a 3/8th inch 1t lifting, gal, bow shackle will be stronger than the chain. You could go for overkill and buy a 2t HT, G8, gal bow lifting shackle, Crosby seems the most common supplier (but there are others). I've checked three different manufacturers of 3/8th inch 1t or 2t shackles and they all fit a metric 8mm chain. However they may not fit onto your anchor. 1t lifting bow gal shackles are relatively easy to source, though they now tend to come form China - nothing wrong with that, so does much chain.

Bow lifting shackles have a short pin, or small opening, and if you want the 'bow' of the shackle in the slot of the shank you will need to check it actually fits.

You will have a relatively small anchor (15-25kg) if you are using 8mm chain so it will be relatively easy to carry around and actually check.

Here in Oz the best place to buy lifting shackles is from a 'lifting' supplier - people who sell chain and wire for cranes etc. They have a greater range of components, are cheaper than chandlers and know more about shackles than chandlers.

Proof tested chain means the actual piece of chain you buy has been proof tested (or that's the idea). Proof tested shackles might mean that a representative sample has been tested (though some lifting components come individually certified). But with a 2t shackle from a reputable supplier for an 8mm G3 or G4 chain - there is no issue - the chain will be the weak link!

edit - imperial shackles are rated in short tons, not metric tonnes
