Removed the above as a consequence of local Marine Electronics engineers informing me that the device failed to transmit. Long story but after installation of ais and a splitter, the previous year, I discovered, albeit somewhat late, that although I could hear transmissions, on the fixed set, they couldn’t hear me! No good waving at ships you’re not sure of, they need to hear me! New replacement now installed.
Question; is the old set worth repairing? Seems such a shame to just bin it!

Did the original radio work for ages before you added the splitter? If so, maybe the splitter installation caused the damage and may do so again... Did your radio guru test with a SWR meter? As to the repair of the original, it really depends on what you would do with it as you now have another. Perhaps just shove it in the shed to listen - it's got your old mmsi locked in , so that would be an added expense if trying to sell.

Thanks Billjratt. Yes, the set was fine until installation of ais and the splitter. I suspect that that was when the damage was done. Boat wasn’t used greatly for some time due to Covid and when last year I started having issues with the ais, I then realised there was a lack of vhf transmission, although receiving fine.
I assumed the vhf cable was on its way out as I received but could not transmit and although ais was coming in, it wasn’t going out. And that’s when the electronics guys found that the set wasn’t transmitting. Same guys who fitted the ais and splitter initially!
However, a lot of water under the bridge since then.
Replaced the fixed set and vhf cable and all good. Ais too.
Replaced the remote RAM for it too.
Expensive business all round, but very necessary.
I’ve made some enquiries to inspect and repair but costs are extortionate. Just sending it for assessment is expensive!
Probably going to put it on the YBW for sale forum. Maybe there’s a skilled electronics engineer out there who might be able to have a play. Ta.
