People used to say you couldn't make money out of telecom shares. Really? Sgeir, the living proof of counter-intuitive investment success has now received his third dividend from his extensive NTL portfolio.

"I am absolutely delighted! This really proves the value of long-term investment" said Mr Sgeir. "If things stay on track, major investors such as myself could start to make as much as errmm, three, maybe four, pence a year.

"As for the future, well, I'd really like to take advice from forum friends who recently visited the London Boat Show. I'm also thinking of consulting professionals like James Jermain or Paul Jeffes to give me some ideas for a suitable boat purchase.

"This will cause a huge spending bow wave within the marine industry", predicted Mr Sgeir.

And here it is, the cheque that started a revolution within the marine retail sector;

You are obviously a ninny when it comes to investing. I've had 160 shares in Kingston Communications for at least 6 years and the regularly pay dividends of £0.60.
I daren't tell you how much I paid for them.

You can if you buy at the right time. Last August BT shares were at £2.30 last week £3.20. 39% increase (if only)
I reckon you should look for another investor with equally good returns and go for a boat share, just think twice as big a boat and only half the running costs.

/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif It's funny, because some years ago, for professional reasons (when I had a proper job), I bought small shareholdings in most of the main UK telecom service providers. Having previously worked in the industry, I certainly didn't have much confidence from an investment point of view in most of them. Having said that, a lot of the firms actually had/have very good products, but a lot of the problems were created by poor leadership, variable people management, questionable financial planning, over optimistic sales forecasts, and unrealistic expectations about the rate of return on capital.

My objective wasn't so much to make money out of them (which, by and large, I certainly didn't), but to be able to grace the AGMs of certain companies with my grubby presence when the occasion required it.

Quite interesting to watch how it developed - Energis, Telewest and others went through debt for equity swaps, some are now domiciled in Delaware, one I think went to the Netherlands, dear old O2 was swallowed up and moved to Telefónica in Spain, Orange to France Télécom, and One2One spun off to Deutsche Telekom. The once cash-rich Cable and Clueless is a shadow of its former self IMHO, but starting to stabilise. BT and Vodafone soldier on. It's a volatile sector.

The canapés were nice though.

Perhaps you could make money by offering to buy shares on behalf of venture capitalists ? The curse of Sgeir would make their takeover task much less expensive.

Domhnall Dubh ?

I realise that in these hysterical times an enquiry about an usual name could be construed as racism, but I just had to ask anyway.

What are the origins of these striking and noble forenames.

Given my activities at the time, some may have described me as Domhnall Ruadh, but that didn't approximate to my hair colour. Sadly, now, a thing of the past./forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif
