Hi - does anyone know where I can get hold of a cheap (2nd hand or new) sextant?
My gadget-loving boyfriend wants one for his birthday so we can get lost even more easily.
Any offers/ideas would be gratefully received. We're in Poole.
cheers jackson

Theres one advertised on the Ebay auction site with a missing mirror - a plastic one, you'll probably get it cheap...

Ye Gods and little fishes!

I just looked at that site.

Twenty years ago I bought, from what was them JD Potter in the Minories, a secondhand Plath Navistar Classic with 6 x 30 telescope and bubble horizon. A snip at Pds 250, including re-certification.

That sextant has been banged and bumped around all over the globe, left on board for ages, etc etc. It has not been actually dropped, but it has had salt water over it more than once. Does not seem to have come to harm.

BUT....

I find that the 6 x 30 telescope is US$250 and the bubble horizon is US$1,299 and as for the sextant itself the Classic is no longer made but the Traditional (basically the same but less perfect - 12sec rather than 8 sec permitted error) is "last few available - ring us for price"!)

I shall be treating my sextant with renewed respect -indeed,
it is obviously too good to take sailing!

There was a usable (from appearance) Heath three circle sextant from the 1960's on Ebay which went for Pds 226 recently.
