Am looking for a sextant to learn the black art with. Anyone interested in a straight swap for a Nikon camera outfit? It includes 1 FM2 Body, 1 F401 body, 28mm AF, 50mm AF, Manfrotto 144 tripod with B/J head and Manfrotto Monopod all in good order, well used but servicable. Anyone interested give me a call on 07813 600472

It is lovely to use a really nice instrument, but honestly, lots of sailors have gone on surprisingly long trips with just a cheap plastic sextant. You'd probably pick one up at a jumble sale quite reasonably, and keep your camera. The difficult bit is using the thing while the boat is bobbing around, trying to keep lined up with the horizon and the sun/moon/star, etc. Get the hang of this bit without falling overboard, and the rest is cream cheese.
Peter.

A good sextant

Seriously, the current Chinese standard sextant is really, really good. Far better than the East German Zeiss that many people bought a few years ago. Our ships carry them - I pulled one out the other day to make a point to the second mate and had the shock of my life; it was a lovely instrument, certainly as good, for practical purposes, as my 1950s Plath, and from the yottin' point of view better, being half the weight. They are available commercially, and not horribly expensive.

There are really two reasons for going for a new metal sextant - firstly, modern sextants have far better optics - lovely big mirrors and easy telescopes, so you find what you are looking for much faster - and secondly you can be sure that nobody has dropped it.

Plenty of sextants

on e-bay.

Both me and a friend bought that way and have been very pleased, we both bought Freiberger sextants with all view mirrors.
