an update on what is happening with the sewage problem, Dominic was sent this yesterday evening:
Dear Sir or Madam
I attach our final routine briefing on the current pollution investigation and clear-up operation at Little Marlow sewage treatment works (STW). We are sending this out to update local residents and river users on the situation.
Thank you to all those who have advised us they have seen more sewer debris in the river and sent us photographic evidence. We have responded to these reports of abnormal discharges from the STW over the early May bank holiday weekend. Our inspections found no evidence of further pollution. We took water quality samples from the outfall, where the treated effluent is discharged to the River Thames. The results were within the limits set out in the environmental permit. We found what we believe is an algal bloom, turning the water brown and causing foaming. We are awaiting algal sample results to confirm this. This isn't unusual for this time of year and it is not harmful to health. The continued presence of any sewer debris in the River Thames is from previous pollution, and should be reported to Thames Water for clean up.
We continue to check the situation with Thames Water twice a day and are sending Officers to investigate reports made to us. The situation is generally improving as the process recovery plan for the site is implemented. A recent pump failure did not cause further pollution. Much work still needs to be done and we continue to closely monitor this. We are seeking agreement from Thames Water to provide you with the direct contact details for their staff dealing with Little Marlow, so you can approach them directly. We will circulate these as soon as we can.
We are also investigating reports of odour from the site and working with Thames Water and Wycombe District Council Environmental Health team to work out how this could be dealt with. We are also meeting with Thames Valley Public Health England Centre to address concerns about the affects of sewage on people's health. We are never able to guarantee the river is safe. But we can confirm that the effluent now being discharged meets the requirements of the permit. River users need do their own risk assessments and take usual precautions against waterbourne diseases. We will share any further information or advice we get from our partners with you, along with any significant news about the site.
We look forward to meeting many of you at the upcoming River User Group meeting and Little Marlow Sewage Treatment Works Liaison Committee. Please continue to report any unusually discharges to our 24 hour reporting line on 0800 80 70 60.
In the meantime we are busy following up our investigations, dealing with the site and responding to new reports of pollution.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.
I thought the river was looking particularly brown and algal bloom the cause. Never noticed it before, interesting. They do beautiful colours elsewhere in the world and we get Brown
