Severn crossings Toll cuts!

Surely £3 one way? At least that's what they said on Radio Bristol this morning
Would love £1.50 EW, might even keep the boat in Cardiff

The cost of using the two Severn Bridges will be more than halved under new Government plans.

Cars, small vans and small buses will pay £3 in tolls from 2018. The changes would come into effect when the Severn Crossings go into public ownership in 2018.

The current price for a car is £6.70 and is only paid when cars are coming into Wales from England.

There will also be a consultation on a proposed "free-flow tolling system", aimed at reducing congestion.

This would mean cars, vans and minibuses would pay £1.50 each way on both bridges and larger vehicles would pay £5.

This is what you would pay

Cars will pay £3
Drivers of vans and small buses will also only pay £3 - a reduction of more than 75%
The largest vehicles will also get a 50% reduction - now paying £10
Those who use the TAG system will also receive further discounts. Cars will save £65.12 a month, small buses and vans will save £183 and lorries and coaches will save £198
The Government has said it will continue to look for "further reductions if possible in the future".

Transport Secretary Chris Grayling said the Government is looking at removing toll barriers and introducing "free-flow" tolling on the Severn Crossings, similar to the Dartford Tunnel, to help cut congestion and journey times.

He said this would also allow two-way charging which could mean the price charged for a single crossing will be halved.

Will be nice if it happens.

I don't reckon it will though. That's a good source of income for the government that people are already paying. Introducing new taxes causes uproar, but keeping existing (rightly or wrongly) ones is easier for people to swallow.

Good point but I think this is allready on the cards.
£1.50 ew is good but it should be free, the South Wales economy would receive a massive boost.
I do hope the powers that be have the good sense to keep the payment as one so as to reduce congestion I would say get rid of the booths and have number plate recognition like the Fartford crossing but then I'd feel guilty about how the toll booths workers
