I have severe fouling of my outdrives and have had the boat lifted out to be cleaned. However please see attached pictures of my outdrives. I am being told they are not at all sure what the fouling is, with a possible suggestion of Australian tube worm. Any thoughts / advice?

Doesn't look great! Where do you keep the boat? By compass reference, which way does the boat's bow face? What anti foul/treatment was used on the drives? How long had she been in the water?

Most won't move in 7 weeks! Orientation is quite good to keep sun away from the drives. Perhaps ask others around you if they have had similar issues?

Thats Lymington worm..
I bought a boat kept on the river below RLYC.
Had quite a bit on it..
The owner said that it was something to do with the river water.
How true that was I am not sure, but thats what he called it..

I had our boat lifted for a scrub last week at the haven and the lads on the hoist commented how clean the hull was , as they thought the fouling this year had been particularly bad ( I saw some photos and thought they were boats from the med ;) ) . I can only assume that because we have used the boat a lot this year she has stayed fairly clean . BTW I just use trilux antifoul and brick cleaner on props and shafts and then polish them with metal polish , my theory being that shiny metal is harder to stick to .

I use a tin of the trilux 33 that I paint on my outdrives, I get a much thicker layer of paint on than with the spray cans and seems to keep the weed away much better. I don't know if the formula is different or if it's just the amount of paint I put on.

Of course it doesn't look as good, especially as I have a tin of red still to finish using up before I can buy some white trilux.

I left a small boat on a river mooring in Lymington for about 5 weeks without antifoul (mid june to mid july, also long story), and when it was lifted the entire hull was a half inch thick with that tube worm. It must be a fertile river.

I've now had it coppercoated and painted the trim tabs with Trilux 33, which I agree is better than the spray, plus the spray is too dangerous IMO unless you have a full face mask. I'm living with sore eyes, which started around the time I sprayed some drives with Trilux without wearing eye protection, though of course i'm far from sure that was the cause. Better safe than sorry though.

I did the same this year.. Painted the outdrive with a brush, did two coats so it's nice and thick.. It didn't look brilliant but from what I can see I just have some green slime of the drive, no real growth that I can see.. Compared to last year where I used a can and had a complete bush growing around the drive.. Different location this year which may have an effect but happy its much cleaner this year..

I used this stuff (no connection) on the drive.. http://www.discountantifoul.com/premier-outdrive-antifouling-p-21.html

Used it for years and works well, BUT if you get any slime and try to wipe it off you take half the paint with it, whereby Trilux doesn't (so much) and seems to be working well this year. Next year, not sure to go back to premier paint or stick with Trilux.

Interesting.. I haven't tried to clean the drive or lifted for a pressure wash since putting it on so I guess I will see what happens when I do.. Don't mind so much if it comes off because it saves me the hassle or rubbing it down for next years layer.. :)

Use the same with similar results.. Scooby is correct, rubbing the drive will result in the paint coming off over time, no need to lift out to see it happening, give the drive a scrub in the water and you'll see a mist of paint. Not a problem for me, still lasts the season and cheap compared to other antifouls and in a way, I'd prefer it to be erodible so that successive paint layers are not building up each season.

I lifted my boat after about 3 months and also had loads of tube worm. Never seen it in Lymington before now so maybe something to do with the above average water temperature?
