Last week as talk of cold and rain circulated i was invited to a BBQ on the other side of the bay in the port for economicaly challanged large boats.

Chops were the offer of the week at 2.25 euros kg so i brought those and asked if they would make some sausages for me with herbs garlic and pork fat mixed that the BBQ keeps going.

I sailed accros the bay in a slight swell the day not cold the wind enough to just fill the sails the sea a darker blue that normal, but very clear, there was a submarine passing took the bins for a better look amazing.

I wondered if id been wrong in decideing to wait untill autum to buy new sails? came into the port got down the main (was glad id finaly fitted the lazy jacks!)let go the jib put out the 7.5 kg bruce stearn anchor went forward and passed the lines ashore tied up and joined the others.

We had visited a junk shop that week and id found an alcohol burner which looks ideal for my new heater, another had found a "kit" to add fizz to drinks! We made a large jug of real lemon duice adding only enough sugar to tast without being unhealthy (brown sugar bio)

The water"re" winter sun still walm enough to wear just a pullover the BBQ going the sausages sizzling the lemon drink in hand we wonderd how a bottle of white wine from valroufie would be with added fizz!

It was very good!So we tried another to see if it would be as good it was!!We dug up the baked potatoes over which a small fire had been lit opened them added unsalted bio butter (promotion that week )Each took a sausage and chop i added some boat made chilly pepper (mixed with olive oil and parmasan cheese)Poured another glass of non fizzy wine and we ate!

As we were eating we saw grey clouds on the horizon and the talk turned to shopping and the wonderful things that can make life aboard even the most compact boat comfortable on wet grey evenings !A DVD player which at the moment starts at 80 euros and run 3 hours with 4 rechargable AA batteries or 12v(the add said)

There was also a TV about the same size as the DVD also with a rechargable battery pack reduced from 200 euros to 99 euros! We finnished lunch and put a cichbatta bread in an iron pot which was heating on the BBQ to eat with some cantal cheese, someone had bought a whole one about 10 inches in diameter! And stored for 12 months not the 6 months prefered by shops in general!Hed bought it from the formagerie when visiting his family!

Ive had a small casio TV for years and the normal antenna never gave good reception even in port almost never at anchor! And the programs are very boreing but a modern larger screen TV and satalite could be interesting and dose a small DVD player exist? Or would i have to buy both DVD player & TV??? umm expensive!

The bread was almost ready i went to my bildge to find some bottels of Bordeaux red 1998!That should go well with the Cantal, someone else brought a fruit bread theyed made with losts of dried fruit and nuts!We tried some with a glass or the Bordeaux Ummm very good both wine and bread!

At the "Brico marche" they are advertising an Metronic satalite kit for 58 euros with "transmitter for image and sound" which costs 28 euros for two!

The question we couldent answer was: Could a sat dish battery and solar panel be left on shore (somewhere that can only be reached by boat) and the signal sent by "a box" such as these transmiters to the boat??

Im not sure it would be really practical? But there are safe winter places a bit cut off that 3 or 4 boats could safly stay then perhaps sat TV would be interesting useing a small "camping kit dish"??

Practical or not would it be possiable??

Just found a link www.metronic.com/ which advertises a small TV with TNT?? reception just as a mobile phone has reception?????TNT is a sat link??

Re: Set up a sat dish ashore and send the signal by radio modual to th

I'm guessing but I imagine the wireless link would be a wifi with consequent limited range (about 100m maybe). But I'm not sure (though I'd love to know since I'm trying to set up something too) so if anyone with more knowledge replies you should probably go with their ideas. Look forward to knowing your solution.

Re: Set up a sat dish ashore and send the signal by radio modual to th

If you go to the link there seems to be free packages for analog and digi sat.It would work for sure if the "decoder" is left ashore as well.It says up to 40m the only snag would be changeing chanell!!

To do that depending on how the boats faceing to change chanell would meen a trip on deck or if in the cockpit perhaps a trip to the bow with the "zapper"Or row neat by and change chanell!!Not really practical!!! Thus better if the sat signal could be wirelessly sent to the box! Or a box left to provide power???

Re: Set up a sat dish ashore and send the signal by radio modual to th

Sounds like the radio link that you are suggesting is something like this : web page

They operate on 2.4GHz so probably better than 100m WiFi ( exact distance will depend on model ).

They can be used to aslo carry the remote control signal between the two points ( depending on model again ).

Re: Set up a sat dish ashore and send the signal by radio modual to th

Those things tend to indescriminately splat on the 802.11b/g wifi spectrum (they're both 2.4Ghz) and can cause significant wifi performance drop. This occurred at my parents and I had to move the wifi basestation to another channel. Fortuantely I have the tools to diagnose such problems - but I do wonder if these TV repeaters are causing problems with wifi more generally (and particularly in marinas which are already a challenging environment for wifi).
