Servicing Seacocks

Sorry if this has been covered before, I could'nt find it in archives.

I have two Huge seacocks (5" diam) supplying my engines. Both are very stiff to open and close. How can I free these up ?

tapered cone type seacocks or some other type of valve ?

When the boat is out the water every year I spray white grease or a WD40 type spray oil up into the seacocks from under the boat while someone works the seacock from inside. Always loosens them up a treat

Wow that is a big valve on a pleasure boat. I bet the handles are a foot long to move them!

check carefully what they are made of and condition.

If they are brass Marked CW 617n change out imediately.

Check for pink colour and porosity.

Don't use WD40 as it'll attack the nylon core if it's a ballofix type valve. Use a silicone type lubricant.
