Just had my yacht (built in 2000) lifted ashore for the winter. Would like to service the seacocks this year but haven't done this job before? Is this an easy DIY job? If so any advice on how to go about this would be appreciated.

And if they are gate valves you can get rid of them.

Blakes including Simpson Lawrence (unlikely for a 2000 build) type - undo the three nuts to release the clamping ring. Turning the handle should withdraw the cone. Clean out the crude and regrease - blakes do a seacock grease in a handy tube - ncie and thick. Apply grease reasonably fully and reverse dismantling. Don't overtighten the clamping ring or you will squeeze out all the grease which will promote jamming. Previous debate has suggested a seacock in good nick and well greased should be tightened so that it can be turned without effort without any slackness. If the surfaces are poor, after cleaning out the crude use fine valve grinding paste (from Halfords to clean up the surfaces. Don't overdo it cos your grinding away your seacock!

Ball valves - don't know anything you can do.

If a ball valve, I squirt some aerosol grease (made by wurth) in from the bottom of the inlet, and then work the valve a few times. certainly seems to work.
