Servicing Harken winches - need to remove from deck?

My Jeanneau SO35 has Harken winches – 32-2st & 40-2st. I want to service these – one has a sticky pawl I think. Having taken it apart I conclude that I can't get at the gears and pawls that are on the centreline of the winch without taking it off the deck. Can anybody confirm or refute that? The servicing sheet says only 'remove pawls and springs' and then 'to reach interior shaft bearing winch must be removed from deck' – which suggests that you don't need to to remove the pawls. But if so, I can't see how.

(Apologies in advance if I don't reply quickly to any help: back in the water tomorrow and don't know where I'll find the next internet connection.)

when I serviced my harken winches (2 speed ST40s) I found the same problem. Had to take each winch completely off in order to access the central gears at the bottom. I could find no other way to reach them. I had installed the winches in 2006. May be later ones are different.

Same here, but it was possible to remove the upper bearings and pawls without removing the whole winch.

A bit of a pain compared to Lewmars /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
 
I don't have to remove from deck, same boat, similar Harken winches. Unscew big screw under where winch handle goes, lift off top of winch and barrel. CATCH ANY BEARINGS AND SPACERS THAT FALL - some parts may remain stuck on the inside of the main barrel.

Them lift vertically out two slide-in D-topped pins that retain inner gearwheels, and the pawls are inside these. Clean all in diesel/white spirit/petrol - whatever handy - and reassemble. OIL pawls, grease the rest. About thirty minutes a winch including polishing up the outside of the drums afterwards, assuming these are chrome ones.

THEN an hour or two trying to get the black grease marks off the white deck if you drop any. I prefer to do the job ashore as you have the chance of retrieving anything that falls overboard, but have done it (carefully) afloat.
 
Hang a large towel over the rail, peg it securely and pull the bottom into the gunwale then make wrinkles at both ends on deck to prevent anything rolling off.

For saloon top roll towel and lay in a horseshoe shape leave the gap over the cockpit side only.

Put 2 latex cloves on each hand, you can the dirty outer one off at any time to avoid spreading the old or new grease.

Since you say you have a sticky pawl - would squirting cleaner fluid into the inner winch clear the problem? Then a little light oil to finish the job. Preferable to dismantling unless you really want the fun of springs jumping all over the deck etc.
