Servicing An Old "Greaser" Stern Gland?

My surveyor has required me to service my stern gland. How do I go about that exactly?

It's around an approx 1.5" shaft, and it's quite tight down there in the depths. No way a normal spanner will get on there.

I can't work out exactly how it's held in place also. Would I need to stop the part with the greaser pipe attached from turning while applying torque to the forward (left) end? If so, how?

Looks a normal greased stern gland, consult:

You might need to make up 2 special spanners to apply to the hex nuts. Often, a normal spanner just will not get at them. The right hand nut is a lock nut.

The surveyor probably wants it repacked, but I am sure you can enquire of him.
