At Easter I am going boat fettling at my son's in Wales and need to go prepared in case the only boat shop is closed. My local Yam dealer will sell me everything regardless.

He has an 18 month old Yam 5 4-stroke outboard that has less than 20 hours and has been sitting in the well out on the river all winter. Helpfully, the handbook is on board and I can't find one online.

Having never serviced a 4-stroke o/b before I am wondering what needs to be done after such low mileage. Presumably potential things are:

Spark plug check
Clean or at least check the fuel filter (in-line type?)(rinse in petrol)
Does it have an oil filter?
Change the engine oil (how much of what?)
Change the gearbox oil (ditto)
Does this have an anode?
Check the impeller?

TIA

5 hp 4 stroke not on the list but you should get a pretty ggod idea from the 4 & 6 hp manuals at http://www.yamahaoutboards.com/owner-resources/owners-manuals

Engine oil will almost cerainly be Outboard 4 stroke engine oil . and gear oil outboard gear oil. Quicksilver usually readily available

Almost ceratinly has an anode. Bolted up under the AV plate

replace impeller if not done recently...... hardly worth putting the old one back if you pull it apart to check it.

If old gear oil does not come out "clear and bright" suspect leaking seals or level/drain plug seals ( renew those as a matter of course)

Parts list ( again 5 hp not listed) http://www.yamaha-motor.com/partviewer/?ls=outboard

I have a Japanese four stroke engine. It is on my motorbike. It has been running on the same plugs and oil for 30,000 miles without missing a beat, so that is at least 1000 hours running. I'm not recommending my maltreatment but I think it indicates that after 20 hours your outboard should be OK. I would just check that cooling water is flowing properly, check that the oil level is OK (and that it still looks like oil, after 20 hours it should still be clean) and inspect the plug. The only thing I would buy in advance would be an anode, as you will need one sooner or later.

I have just brought my Honda 2.3 4S out of storage.

Needed draining off old petrol before it would start - when you see what came out, you realise why it was necessary. Started first pull on fresh petrol!

You can go by the book or, it it were me, just change the gearbox oil. 20 hours is nothing so I personally wouldn't bother changing engine oil, spark plug, fuel filter or impeller. In fact I wouldn't bother changing the gearbox oil either, but it's the only way to check that no water has got in, so it's worth doing. The anode will probably need changing unless the outboard has been tilted so that it is not in the water.
