Servicing a thermometer

We have a barigo thermometer mounted on our bulkhead.

It is one of those with a dial and no doubt some sort of expanding coil inside.

In my mind, it has been playing up over the last year and sticking.

So my question is, can anything be done to stop it sticking? Would a quick dab of wd40 help? Or would that just knacker it.

Also, I am assuming that these units cannot be effectively calibrated ? There is a little slot at the back, but gently using a screwdriver and turning, does nothing ( I think)

5. Wie funktioniert ein Thermometer ?
Modell 880 Flüssigkeitsthermometer haben in einer luftleeren Röhre Alkohol (früher Quecksilber), der sich bei Erwärmung ausdehnt und bei Abkühlung zusammenzieht. Über eine Skalierung kann dieLängenänderung als Temperatur abgelesen werden.

Beim Bimetall-Thermometer sind 2 Metalle von verschiedenem Ausdehnungskoeffizienten aufeinandergeschweisst und zu einer Spirale gewickelt. Bei Temperaturänderungen dehnen sich die beiden Metalle unterschiedlich aus. Dadurch kommt es zu einer Drehbewegung der Spirale. Diese wird mit einem Zeiger auf der Skala angezeigt.

I guess the 2nd paragraph is referring to a spiral bimetallic sensor.

Have look. If not intended for marine use it may be full of rust. I'd clean and lubricate in the same way as a small mechanical clock. I d expect to see a calibration screw. Not mentioned in the instructions? Then just done by positioning of the pointer during assembly perhaps
