Subsequent to my post re ordering Volvo spares from the USA, I bit the bullet and ordered a new freshwater pump from a well known east coast Volvo agent. Have dealt with them before, have nothing but praise, as they have often talked me through a minor repair. However at the last minue I was told that I would have to return the old one as it was subject to a service exchange by Volvo, and the new pump would cost me another £200 if I didn't!! I have never come across this before..is this a Volvo rip off or do others do the same ? At £284 I thought I was paying enough already.....

That would be my interpretation and used to be standard practice in the automotive industry for many items eg starter motors etc. It is probably not Volvo but the supplier offering the "discount" they will refurbish and sell on, just a guess.

Well they told me I would be getting a brand new one. The story I was told was that Volvo could be stockpiling them for the future to be able to offer recon units when they were no longer manufacturing new ones, rather than just telling people that they were no longer available.

No way would Volvo stock pile old items as you suggest. If they are running a service exchange scheme then what you get will be a serviced item. Probably indistinghuishable from new but serviced nevertheless.

Ties in with my recent experience when the dealer showed me a "new" tube stack for the heat exchanger. Cept it had clearly been used despite its new packing. I did wonder at the time.

Why didnt you gop with the yanks?

Only 284 GBP? That's a bargain. In Holland we pay over 700 Euro for a circulation pump (for a VP 2003). Virtually the same pump for a car costs maximum 150 Euro. But then again it's not painted in this nice green colour /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Just checked the e-mail reply and it clearly says a new replacement. I was told about Volvo stockpiling for the future by the dealer. I didn't go with the Americans just because they're still showing the old code number which has been superceded and I need it in a hurry and if there are any problems with it it could end up costing me more in the long run. At the moment I am a mere couple of hours drive away from the dealer. As I said before I have always had excellent service from them, just find it a bit odd, as they never mentioned it at the start.
