A true (humiliating) story

So, there I am.
Captain for the hour. Accompanied by various grown-ups and various offspring.

Drifting northerly in a large flybridge boat, having cut the engines, towards the beaches and casino of Juan-les-Pins. Onshore wind of a few knots so need to worry. Let it drift.

With some 50 metres to the swimming zone and everyone ready to continue our journey it's time to restart the engines.

Press green buttons....NOTHING. Try again , press green buttons again...Nothing.

Should I :
a) Press red buttons?
b) Bemoan the fact that I was in the Med and move to Lymington to be closer to Seastart?
c) Ask nearby Jetskis for a tow?
d) Hail a passing Glastron for a tow to deeper water ?
e) Fire up my Bucktooth powered PDA to post an emergency notice on here?
f) Reach for my toolbox and dismantle both engines?
g) 'Fone-a-friend' cos I'd already asked the audience?
h) Reconsider my personal risk assessment as arrogant belief in my own ability?
i) Something else?
j) Remember that experience comes with time, not books and exams?
j) Some lurid or otherwise combination of the above?

There is a correct answer to this, Coliholic's shilling to he/she who gets the right answer. Anyone within a ten-mile radius at the time is excluded on basis that the story already well reported there.

So you put the gear levers into neutral and started the engines.

Correct?

Errr flag the Ice Cream Boat down...... ask for 6 99's and a tow, 'do you wanta nuts with that'?

...but then I would say that wouldn't I.....

Your battery key had been knocked and cut all power, right?

Sorry I wasn't around I was having a most wonderful time in and around the Solent with a bunch of forum members, beautiful weather, great company, great time /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

Case closed

Experience counts ! Took you less time to know the answer than me to post it!

Nearly right .. not me - the owner (who was on board ), sneered sweetly, checked the levers and off we went...

Mind you some of the other observations are equally valid ( i.e. my idiocy)

Hadn't thought of that one.. price of the ice creams though would make it cheaper to fly in personal mechanic.

P.s. Shortage of magnums at present down here on ice cream boats. Will have to complain to local brokers.

Aha...got you......if you are offeriing 'coliholics shilling' this confirms that you recognise your indebtedness to him. I think your attitude exceedingly cavalier if, after all this time, you think you can use the bob you owe coliholic to reward some quickwitted forumite for recognising your already previously established brain challenged approach to boats.....after all, you still havent bought one, have you/forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

Boatone may soon be Boattwo

Sod the Healey - I think I'll buy an E-Type.

I'd have gone for the gear levers too, maybe the ones downstairs had been played with. Currently schlepping around Toulon so I could have waded out and laughed.

Or then again...

You don't mean 'some sort of tosser above' as in the post above yours I hope?

...but then I would say that wouldn't I.....

Watch it !!

When I lived in Cardiff , took me 3 years to learn that when Penarth-ians spoke of a 'creche'..... they mean an altercation between 2 cars!!

Zooms, that takes me back.

Re: Watch it !!

Accuracy !!

The only point at issue was he wanted a 1898 one !!!!

Where is he anyway? Coliholic.

Boat-buying on hold ... going to put advert in MBY for a boatshare down here , in next couple of months. Meanwhile continuing to scrounge days out and JFM found a bareboat twin to hire. Booked for later this week .... SoF really quiet today (holidays over !!! ). Only 2 months of season left.

Re: Accuracy !!

Has the wind abated? I came home early due to F6/7 west'ly. Best spot was Theole because mountains sheltered wind but had green water over the bow getting there.

Re your predicament, you should have strapped 3hp outboard on imho....

Re: Case closed

Only because 9 years ago, I was towed into a marina by the port authority and after 2 hours and several drinks I lent on gear lever and it went click and I realised that the engine was not &&**$d (I mean broken) and we all went home.

What ! And admit I didn't know where the anchor release button was, man hadn't even given me a remote control .... would have spoiled story anyway.
