Re: seriously inspiring story - best of luck to this young man

Think I might start calling the press every time I go sailing.

Good for him, but why not just get on with it, what is it about banging the drum every time some south coast, disabled or ill person goes out on the water?

Must confess, I agree, all getting a bit boring reading about someone that the organisers are using to promote their sponsorship (imho), the guy is in remission, I have met 2 long distance single handed sailors with one leg (each), they just got on with it. I thought free boat trips were only given to young thugs who stole cars etc..... /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Well I think it is inspiring to see someone getting on with their lives and going for it in spite of adversity. Too many people these days are only too willing to say "I can't do it". He should get our whole hearted support not sniping.

Agreed. I see no sign that he is seeking publicity for himself, only his association with the Trust. I think I would be willing to forgive him most things anyway. On the other hand, some of these ventures do seem to be pushing the boundaries of common sense and there is a level of risk beyond which I cease to admire them I'm afraid.

Pictured here are 6 good reasons to publicise this sort of thing. I'd much rather read this sort of news than than, for example, the recent stuff about a singer wasting her life on class A drugs. Sort of restores your faith. Doesn't it???

ok, I concede maybe you're right, it is special and should not be allowed to be discussed, like the RNLI or similar.

Sometimes I just think the publicity is more likely to scare people off than encourage them. Whole page spreads because some disabled bloke is planning to have a sail makes it seem far more difficult than it perhaps really is.

I sort of get your drift - I think it's the high powered PR spin / gloss that organisations feel they have to use for things like this that takes the edge off it all.
Sorry if I gave the impression that it shouldn't be discussed - not what I intended. On the contrary, free speech and all that.

Why bring this kind of topic to a forum - its not a topic worth discussing this forum should have a "shout out" realtime scroll board so users such as "oldsail3r" can hail there moment of inspiration so that a select number of members logged on will notice it.

I thought it was worth sharing - isn't the point of a forum that anyone can post, if it isn't a worthy thread then no one will reply or view, as this post has created debate then it surely is a worthy topic.

Has this chap actually paid to do the clipper or "cynical mode" just been given the ride with the publicity. Loads of people suffer from the Big C and other problems, beat them and just get on with it.

Fair play so he has been introduced to sailing and has a flair for it and wants to pursue it.

Cretin - can't even spell!

If more people realised the real achievers in life, like those who belong to the Ellen MacArthur Trust, we might start to move forward.

You bet! Like all this stuff about 10 year anniversary of Lady Di etc. All I can remember from that day was trying to get the Shipping Forecast, which was canceled. Not fun in windy conditions in a borrowed lightweight 28'.
