Hi Folks,
I have just purchased an old 1975 diesel Senior 26 (please don't laugh). Can anybody shed some light on the makers etc or if there is an owners club. Also can the stern drive be trimed? The old owner filled the front with ballast as he thought she swung about a bit without it and I thought it a bit strange that even in the 70's they built tail heavy craft. I'm new to owning a cruiser so would welcome any advice on the subject. Thanks, Alan /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Great boat

Throw all the ballast off and see if it goes ok

if you find it wanders a bit make a small rudder and clamp to

the Harry Enfield

cheers Joe

The standard answer to a wandering boat is ballast Not

always

just enjoy and learn how the shopping trolley works

My 8 year old drives the boat as straight as I do /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Only problem is what do I do with all that sand, it would silt up the marina. And thats not to mention the old iron weights. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif Alan

Excellent another senior 26 owner!!!! what engine have you got?

Belive me they are an excellent sea boat for there size, they really punch above their weight, i have been in a F6 and never felt in danger. I would not want to do it again, but thats my preference not the boat.

I have 2 perkins 4108's - and yes, they are stern heavy! you can trim the drive by removing the reverse locking bar and fitting in to another hole. I have mine trimmed as far in as possible, i have one managed to get 12 knots through the water, but it requires everything to be perfectly balanced. Generaly i cruise at 7.5 knots.

Its worth checking that water is not getting into the transom via the gasket on the leg. Have a look for water around the drive/plywood in the engine bay.

Senior were bought by marine projects that become princess, and there are 2 different versions on the 26, one with a flat roof (mark 1) and a stepped roof (mark 2) i have the stepped mark 2 hull (mines a 74)

Err, cannot think of anything else right now... /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Hi, Mine must be a mark 2 as it has a stepped roof. It has a single perkins 4108. Will check for water on Sat as work calls tomorrow. Thanks for advice on trimming. I take it that she will have to come out of the water to carry this out? I hadn't thought of taking her out to sea although the guys at the marina seemed to assume that I will. Think I will learn to sail her ih the river before I attempt to take her through the bar mouth on the Bann (N. Ireland) Thanks again.

Alan.

i reckon i could do mine in the water, but they could be totaly seized up - and be careful about hitting with hammer that swivel plate is probably 30 years old /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

take her out, i love going to sea - but do wish i could do 15knots all the time, but at 1 gallon per hour per engine at 2500 rpm - its a no brainer on cost! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
(Forgot to add - mine is stern heavy cos of the 2x40 gallon fuel tanks on the back! which are full at the moment)

Hiya Joe, What about the rolling of the Senior 26 single perkins. Mine does roll (and list if we are not seated evenly about) a hell of a lot, is that another thing to get used to?
Cheers, Reg

I own a 1966 Senior 26 for the last 7 years, my one is a one off as the Boat is 28ft with a twin Hydraulic Drive system and was constructed at Senior Marine's short lived site in Brightlingsea.
The Senior 26 was designed by Hugh Easton who was Senior Marine Designer who was also associated with Seamaster and Eylisan,

Ironically, my Senior 28 is ashore for some work on the River Itchen in Southampton close to Kemps Quay where Senior Marine were based for a few years.
