Hi all,
I am putting my Princess 32 on the market without going through a broker (loads cheaper).
Do I have to let anyone know when I have sold her, i.e the SSR people and radio licencing people or do I leave this to the new owner.
Also, someone told me I have to have some kind of legal document to finalise the sale to pass on the proof ownership.
Could any of you out there advise me on this please.
All the best
Syd

As the seller you nee do nothing more than collect the cash,
however the buyer may require more of you.
So its handy if you have the bill of sale from when you bought
it. It ay also be nice to tell the SSR and radio people but I dont think there going to knock on your door if you dont.
Think about this. Its no different than selling your old lawn mower. But to the buyer it represents a bigger risk so convince him that its not nicked.

Say you sell the boat to somebody for cash and then say that somebody does something illegal with the boat, maybe a spot of drug running or illegal alien transporting and then abandons your boat in a Channel port. On whose door do you think Plod are going to be knocking?
You should at least complete a signed Bill of Sale (Maritime and Coastguard Agency produce them) and probably an invoice/receipt to confirm title to the boat has changed and you have received money for it.
In addition, any sensible Buyer will probably want a copy of the original invoice to confirm VAT paid, any other Bills of Sale confirming the train of ownership (particularly the one confirming you are the Owner) and the Builders Certificate which confirms hull and engine numbers. Since the SSR is supposed to be a registry of ownership, then it's in the Buyers interest that they know about the change of ownership as well

On The Other Hand

My boats registered twice on SSR so thats not worth a w***
and then if the customer abandons the boat he might just abandon the papers as well.
Well thats unless he go's to the police with them like a good boy.
Then theres all the money you've got now!!
Must be drug smuggling and the papers, well thats your cover int it !! No I thnk you are guilty as charged.
30 years!!

Re: On The Other Hand

The whole point is that YOU also keep a copy of Bill of Sale and receipted invoice so you can prove the boat is sold otherwise more loot for parasite lawyers
SSR not worth a w*** until you're asked for some proof of registration in a Dutch port, as happened to me once. Agreed that it in no way confirms title, so next to useless

You can get a Bill of Sale from the MSA [Marine Safty Agency] in Cardif 02920 747333 - they look after the Registry of Shipping and Seamen. The bill of sale is an official documnet for the transfer of ownership of a Part 1 registered British Ship. As an alternative I would suggest drawing up an 'unencumbered sold as seen' contract similar to one for selling a used car.
