Does anyone have advice for Selling a yacht in Italy. What is the best method based on your experience (internet, private ads, physical broker, ebay, etc). I am based in Sardinia though will be travelling along the west coast of Italy for the summer and would like to aim for a good place to sell at the end of the season. Also do some brokerage companies provide space on the hard (for free or discounted) whilst your yacht is for sale? Thanks for your advice.

When I had to get rid of my previous boat in a hurry, to make space for the new one, I literally sold it in one week through an ad in the "Bolina" magazine website here ; it's free, but only in italian. It did generate quite a lot of enquiries, although for sure the low asking price did help a lot.... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

You do not say where is your boat registered, and whether you aim at selling to the local market or to foreigners (it may make a lot of a difference).

Don't know about brokers who may offer storage room for the boat being sold; not likely, and even less likely to be for free, unless maybe in some cheap places like yards along some rivers (e.g. the canal from Livorno to Pisa, or near Rome).

There are some possibilities in Northern Adriatic, but that's a hell of a distance from where you are!

Hi - and welcome to the forum

You might want to add some more info to your profile - such as boat type - then people will have a much better idea of whether its a £20K boat or £150K.

Perceived wisdom is that craft brought back to the UK will achieve a better price - Italy has a reputation for being soft on the prices at the moment.

So if the boat is of a higher value - it may pay to have a delivery crew bring it home. This is certainly the case for Northern Europian boats - HR Westerly etc,

It also depends where you will be - will you be staying in Italy or UK? Most boats left with brokers get into a filthy state, and are not attractive at first sight - boats should be presented in pristeen condition at all times to sell easily.

Some thoughts for you.... No doubt you will get some useful advice from this forum.

I have sold a UK registered boat near Rome and from my experience (and I'm sure many others) there is no better way to sell a boat anywhere, than to follow the 'Gianfranco method'. ie. make it cheap enough.
I doubt if you will find 'a broker' or yard to discount your stay if your boat is for sale. So what are your choices?
Leave the boat at your chosen 'haven' for storage/winter and politely let it be known to the proprietor that your boat is for sale. (Must quote asking price)
Advertise as Gianfranco said in Free Italian Mag. ( I chose the former and sold to a wonderful Italian couple)
I'm sure you are well aware of other ways to advertise a boat for sale and if the price is right you will find a buyer.
Good LUCK

Yep, Bolina is the way to go. Ebay isn't so big over here. Assuming it's a sailing boat we're talking about, anyway, as Bolina ('Close-hauled') is for raggies. If you're in a 'raggie-rich' area like the north-west coast around Genoa or north-east around Trieste (tho' not Venice), it would be worth putting an ad in the local classifieds newspaper. I can find out which is relevant to your area, if you wish.

Hi All,

Thanks for your imput its going to help a lot.
I have a Moody 33 Mk 1 1974 Sailing Yacht registerd on the SSR in the UK. She is in Sardinia where I have an annual birth until the end of this year, which can be renewed if we decide to leave it there for sale. We will be asking around GBP20k, but would be happy to negotiate for a quick sale. She is a great first boat and have been fantastic for us learning to sale and travel from the UK. We are moving to Australia after this season and is the only reason why we are selling.

Thanks,

Dave

I would also add:
Solo Vela
Fare Vela
Vela e Motore

They all run free ads and can be reached by the web.

The only ad I would make (paying, that is) is on "Il giornale della Vela" .

Brokers, IMHO, for this type of boats (I sold my 20 footer last year) are useless: they came up with contacts with people that already had contacted me for the ads...

Typical sales season is from april to end of june..........

Best of luck.
