Installing more HP this winter, so need to part with the old Beta. What's the view on good selling options? (Other than the price limited PBO Forum).
Here in Cumbria we're not at the centre of the boating universe, so local ads probably won't generate great response.
E-bay auction prices seem a bit unpredictable, and with potentially highish commission charges.
Is "Boats and Outboards a good choice? A free ad. is tempting. Is there a downside?
Any other avenues?

i sold my old perkie 4108 on boats & outboards

eBay classified ad? No auction unpredictability, but a lot of people looking. If I was looking for a second hand engine, eBay would be the only specific site I'd think to look at (I'd then do a general Google search which would pick up boats & outboards etc).

No idea what the charges for classified ads are like.

Pete

Boats and Outboards. Sold my 1GM. Placed an on line ad and the phone started ringing almost immediately. Best to offer it while still installed so buyers can see it running.

I recently sold my old Volvo 2030 on ebay which was my first experience of using the site. Nothing happened until the last few minutes when there was a lot of frantic activity. I was reasonably happy with the price I got (£750) but an almost identical engine went for several hundred pounds more a few weeks earlier so it is unpredictable.

sell on ebay as a classified add and then people are not bidding on it and will cost a fixed fee of about a tenner and no commission charged so advertise for what you want leave your phone no and you have 30 days of advertising.most people sell expensive items like this as a lot of people will see and if interested will call to view at your discretion and you will have person to person selling ability.

An old Sole Mitsubishi L series sold on ebay for 510 though it was described as a Vetus and missing alternator and corroded waterpump. Without too much risk I bid 250. Remembering it's a 30 year old engine and will only take oversize rings, if it's already +20 and low compression, it has to be bored and sleeved, a costly job.

Glad I read this thread as just about to re-engine my boat and replace the 4108.
Might be good to list it before it is taken out so it can be seen running. Didn't think of that till I read the thread. :)

sold my old petter on Boats and outboards within a day, wished i asked more for it:( he even helped me remove it and he travelled quite a way,a round trip of 500 miles he said.

Bought a replacement on b&o's.

I sold our old Bukh DV20 on EBay for £719, commission (inc paypal)was around 10% IIRC buyer arranged and paid for the courier to collect on a pallet. I think it cost him around £70.

I removed the engine attached it to a pallet and it was collected within a week of the end of the auction.

I would have liked more, but I was happy with the price I got for what was already a reconditioned engine.

If you're re engining, I wrote a feature which is in this months (Nov 2012) Yachting Monthly, and have a look at YM Plus for the list and cost of everything I needed.:)

What sort of Beta is it? What sort of value?

I sold a Yanmar 3GM on Boats & Outboards. I put it on at about 10:00 and at 12:30 I had an offer that I declined. At 15:30 I had a full price offer and the promise of a cheque in the post immediately, it arrived first thing next morning. Before I could remove the listing I had
5 more inquires, one offered £250 more than the asking, I declined having already accepted a deposit.

to be fair you were well rid of it ;)

I think petters are good engines, the fella i sold it to travelled from the lake district to South wales on my word that it had a new cylinder head fitted.

I think it was a better engine than the Volvo 2001 i replaced it with.
