A friend wants to sell his boat and I'd like to give him a hand.He used to live on it in the Algarve but he has now moved to a flat in London. The boat is a 33ft 1972 ketch/motorsailor built in the Isle of Man .It's very strongly built and even the bulkheas are solid fiberglass. It needs full standing and running rig renewal as well as a lot of work on the interior. It's also engineless ,the old BMC having died years ago.The boat is a great seagoing craft for those who like the type and I'm sure my friend will price it for what it is.The problem is where to advertise. She is now lying on a ramp in a small shipyard near Tavira in the Algarve.
Any advice welcome.

I think I'd try sailing club notice boards - for those out of personal visiting range a nice little letter to the secretary should get a spot on the board, with a decent photo.

What I wouldn't bother with is Appolloduck; I was looking for a particular boat today which I knew is on there but it took me ages to find, trawling through some of the most overpriced tat I have ever seen !

There were some good bargains sure, but the project boats especially struck me as mostly way over priced, and how any potential buyer finds his dream boat while retaining the will to live beats me...

Think it is a Peel Offshoreman

From your description, the boat sound like a Peel Offshoreman built by Peel Marine as shown in this link.

There was one sold recently for about £30k ish.

If you advertise your friends boat I would include some images of similar boats although not many were built but this might inspire a potential customer.

Really nice lines on that, pretty ends. But a tatty engineless boat without proper rigging in an overseas location and a very unfamiliar marque to most people? That is a very, very difficult sell. He will probably end up giving it away to cover accumulated yard fees.

That's the one.My friends boat must have been home completed because the interior is horrible to say the least. The hull and coachroof and even the interior were at some point painted a disguting shade of blue. The one in your link is very pretty and beautifully finished.I believe my friend would be happy with a really low price, just to get rid of it.There are no outstanding bills to be paid which is a good thing.

Local advertising sometimes works. eg hang a 'For Sale' sign on it you will then reach out to potential buyers looking for a boat in that particular location. Good luck with selling something that requires a lot of work in a foreign boatyard - that sort are two a penny.

There's no harm in trying.I'm just trying to help him.He should have done it himself but since he didn't I'll see if I can help him get rid of it.

Viking funeral probably the best solution - or maybe keep chickens in it.

There is a point at which a boat no longer has any value, but disposing of the remnants after you have stripped out anything useful is a major challenge.

On the contrary, this boat has a lot of potential.Somebody fancying a go anywhere motorsailor would have there a good starting point. The hull and masts are in very good shape and my friend wouldn't ask more than three or four thousand euros for it,if that. One of those MarinePower (?) engines would be cheap enough and the interior could be done up in less than a year.I know because I've done it before. It pains me to see a good boat go to waste.

It is not the purchase price that is the problem, but the huge amount of time, effort and money to get it up and running when there is such a good choice of functioning boats on the market.

Don't know about the potential where you are, but clearly more suitable for northern waters, but not worth bringing here. Best treated as a garden shed - somewhere to hide in the back of a boatyard so that the owner can escape from home with a good excuse! Great value for sitting with your mates in the sun drinking beer and discussing the "project".

Kelsie was immaculate though

used to sit two moorings along from me when i was at Tignabruaich

poor condition, no engine, on a ramp in Portugal - a bit of a challenge either way i think

I have to agree.I wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole but there many dreaming nutters outhere who might find it appealing.
I told my friend to put it on Ebay.I'm still waiting to see it.
