Instead of harassing innocent people with Marine Conservation Zones would'nt it make more sense if the Environment Agency & do gooder Conservationists did something about this sort of thing? There is plenty of good work they could do particularly in places like Portsmouth Harbour & Fareham (where this picture was taken) what with the amount of rubbish that litters the creek bottom. In my opinion who ever did this should be punished

I'm told the reason you see so many old wooden boats rotting in creeks is that it was considered bad luck to break them up. Maybe someone has the same superstition.

I agree about leaving yotties alone, but am having trouble imagining how & why that boat ended up like that ?!

Because it would have cost money to dispose of it responsibly seajet.
It has been totally gutted & just dumped first down Hoeford creek then somehow it was cast adrift & washed up on the bank opposite where it now resides.
Hopefully somebody knows the owner & is able to report him/her to the Harbour Master/Environment Agency & they will prosecute the barsteward for polluting the environment?

Not a happy sight! It looks very much like a Macwester, perhaps a Rowan, from the stern end. Just like mine, but why, I wonder, has it been butchered?:(:(

I think it is a Macwester & believe me it is built like a tank. The deck seems to be at least half an inch thick & I can't imagine that it was beyond hope.It must have been a very nice little boat before someone butchered it :(

I find the odd rotting hulk in creeks romantic but then wood bio-degrades.
I wonder how long our modern fiberglass boats will remain shedding glass strands into the environment unless somebody does something about it & this is not the first fiberglass hulk that I am aware of....it is an environmental disaster waiting to happen.
I certainly hope it brings this particular owner bad luck.

it's not actually polluting the environment is it? It's just an eyesore the same as those hulks in Tipner Lake!

Of course it is polluting the environment,it is hardly a natural feature is it?
It will not bio-degrade & the constituent parts will have an adverse effect on the wildlife.Everywhere you look you see the results of our selfishness on the environment.Climate change will be the ultimate expression.

I feel a sudden urge to hug a tree------- after I'v pumped the bilges and emptied the lav vac .

Horace,

I'm willing to bet you a pint ( of normal beer ) that someone comes up with a way of detecting or nullifying grp strands in mud rather sooner than they find a way of getting rid of nuclear waste lifed at thousands of years.

And I'm a believer that right now we need nuclear power ! Not token wind jobs as a get rich quick scheme for a few while ruining the environment...

Its not down to the EA cause its on the sea.

Local bylaws will cover it so Harbour master territory.

It's in Portsmouth Harbour therefore QHM territory. I wonder if the OP has contacted him with regard to this vessel?

I already have the solution to getting rid of nuclear waste, just dump it on the moon :D Cleaning up our own mud & rubbish will take a little longer.
Actually I'm on your side seajet in that I don't think that wind power is the answer & nuclear power is a more suitable solution (in the absence of tidal power & stuff that we are faffing about with).
Now to get back to my original bone of contention. What are we going to do about all the debris & rubbish littering our beautiful creeks & estuaries & polluting the environment?

I know & I've complained to the Queens Harbour Master Portsmouth before on similar issues. He moved so slowly that in at least one case pollution was the result.I am given to believe that he is a very busy man with the Naval Dockyard to oversee so maybe it's understandable but with the new found enthusiasm for Marine Conservation Zones & militant 'conservationists' with vested interests. If they are genuine should'nt they also be taking an interest in matters such as these? ("Natural England" also administer some parts of the creek that are deemed sites of special scientific interest though not very well as far as I can see & recently I believe have had a hand in mooring re-allocations).
It seems to me that all these "conservationists" are very active & animated as long as it dos'nt actually mean doing anything practical

It's gonna become a valuable 'environment' for seabirds, weed, crustacea, polyps. etc. So no problem.

Most of it's just out the water so mainly it's going to be an eyesore & a blot on the landscape. It might become a sort of children's theme park but then some parts of it are already quite hazardous & the local health & safety might not licence that ;)
