C'mon own up. How many of you guys are loath to hand the wheel over to your spouse/partner. Is it because you don't trust them? Or maybe because it would mean you running up and down the stairs, as your other half says 'get me this' 'get me that' or perhaps because you're just plain selfish ??? /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Don't be silly Pauline. Wimmin can't even drive cars. Imagine the carnage they could create at the helm of a complicated boat! /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

errrmm, I think I'll go find something else to do for a few days

I can't do anything but agree.
For the record, the previous weekend I was steering the boat for maybe 1/2 hour total, while the wife steered for the other 16 hours (on a 3-day trip).

So some tips as to how to teach quickly?

It pains me to see peeps running the boat with outdrive not correctly trimmed, but they need much more time to just get used to helming and using throttle correctly - trim comes later? There is no way I'm used to which can teach this level quickly and simply My boat is very trim sensitive, so the only way to teach is hours of practice and knowledge

Explain how it works and demo it to them. Then once you have the boat on the plain and steady , let them play with the trim, show what it does, tipping sideways or bow up/down. when the boat is trimmed properly she feels much more stable/safe and comfortable. Let them judge by the speedo, if trimmed right the speed will raise slightly , if over trimmed it will drop.
Try it and let me know how you get on. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

This is a truism. My wife enjoys being on the boat and takes the helm when I ask her, but cannot (raggyspeak warning!) get the hang of keeping her eye on the wind, watching the telltales or windex or working out the relationship between the set of the sails, the wind direction or windshifts.

I still think that it's a male thing. That women, culturally, don't get as involved (obsessed) in the mechanics of boating.

As a general rule. appologies to powerskipper/paulineb

Some do!
some don't

The advise I give and after talking to many ladies, is send them on a course or get an instructor down on your boat and you disappear.
Or see if there is a Ladies only course run near you, I know of one place that will run ladies days, bit like a helming course, but how to get the boat back if you are incapacitated.

Always wondered what would happen if I fell in and I've tried to put the point across for years. They dont mind doing fenders and ropes but driving, less dead easy or miles out to sea on auto. They dont want to know.

Absolutely.

They get bored driving the boat on the open sea and scared when approaching another boat/pontoon/lock wall.

That's my experience anyway. Any females out there want to change my mind??
