By self steering I presume that you mean wind driven self steering, or windvane self steering.
If so I think that you will find that everyone believes that the make that they have fitted is the best.
Wind steering works, and can work very well. The servo system, in my opinion, works the best from all that I have been able to read. (Rather than direct steering)
We have a Monitor and are very happy with it. Get more details at www.selfsteer.com
I also have a Tradewind 35 fitted with a Windpilot Pacific. Brilliant, steered us all the way back from Barcelona last year. Easy to fit and not so obtrusive as some models. Try their web site www.windpilot.de /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif
after much research and chatting to other Tradewind 35 owners, decided that Hydrovane was best bet for my tradewind 35, but no ackers to buy it, yet... friend next to me with a malo 39 also fitted one and is well pleased.
I have used a windpilot for 12 years of extensive cruising, great.
Had a Navik on a smaller vessel prior to that. Not up to the grade for real serious conditions.
I've used the same Monitor on 2 different boats. Easy to change, just get Scanmar to bend you a new set of tubes/mounts.
The two boats? Late 1960's 30' half tonner and a 1980's 33' cruiser racer worked equally well. I think it's the dog's danglies. Mind you I haven't sailied with any other gear.
The only other gear I would consider is the Fleming.
>> Unless your way over lenght for the place no one will ask about the length the windvane takes! <<
I don't think that's true in the main UK marinas anymore Trouville. There have been several threads on here bemoaning the fact that the marina staff will nip out with their tape measure to check you are paying for every last centimetre of projection!!!
Lord knows why people tolerate it, but I guess beggers ...............!
I have a Windpilot which has proved pretty good on Sweet Lucy but with a limited range of wind direction - OK from on the wind to just aft the beam. If I was fitting one again I would give serious thought to Hydrovane. By reputation it works well and has the great advantage that it provides an emergency rudder should you lose the main one.
I too had a Windpilot for several years but later got a Hydrovane - enormous improvement - particularlygood down wind in light airs, in conditions the Windpilot could not handle.

I picked up a new Bavaria to deliver to Gib - it stripped the gears on a 4000 3 times on the way down - Bavaria recommend hydraulic ram on the quadrant as the minimum for their boats I think
