Hi,
I am currently a 4th year Product Design Engineering student at Glasgow University/Glasgow School of Art. I am looking for people who will be able to give input for my current project, a wave powered bilge pump. In particular I would like to have a main collaborator, someone with both design and boating experience/knowledge. However I am also looking for ‘typical users’ of such a product who could give me feedback on my designs, I am really targeting the product at owners who keep their boat in the water in less sheltered areas i.e. not in a marina. If you feel you could spare me some time over the following year I would be grateful if you could get back to me and I will send more information.
Contact me via YBW if you are registered or alternately using email, TrebleDesigns@hotmail.com

Regards
Connel Treble

Hmm, I think there is already one on the market - can't remember the name, believe it's from the USA but not sure. There is also a Fridge that uses the motion of the boat to pump water for cooling - I think! Try a search on Google or look thro' the boating mags,
Remember keep it SIMPLE, use materials that won't be affected by corrosion, salt water, UV radiation. Oh and it must be as cheap as possible!
Anyway, good luck on your project.

Thanks
I've found one product so far, a Norwegian design called the 'SMART pump' (http://www.jrsupplies.com) but as with all designs there are flaws.
In particular I feel that £55 isn't a great price as you say keep it cheap. I am looking at something that is a bit more compact or 'neater' if you like! Something that you can throw in a locker when you go away without fear of it breaking.
A major point I was looking at was battery drain that occurs with 12V pumps over unattended periods. Although I think I will post a survey to try and find out more about user expectations/needs. What does the majority of your work as a design engineer involve, are in any particular field?

Cheers

There is an wave/motion operated bilge pump currently fitted on one large open boat in Stromness Orkney. It appears to do the job.
It pricipally works with the vertical rise/fall with afloat on the water connected to a piston via a pulley. I do not have any further details but I do remember it was advertised many years ago in sailing magazines.
I hope you continue your efforts.
