Why would "Tescos" need an apostrophe? Arguably is shouldn't have the "s", but is is not a possessive, nor a contraction; merely an unnecessary plural.

I think the origin is shops named after their owner - hence "Smith's", "Johnson's", etc. People carry the habit onto businesses not named that way - there never was a Mr Tesco. So it's an unnecessary possessive rather than an unnecessary plural.

That is the problem though. If there is only one greengrocer it would be correct.
But that would wrong because the Greengrocer's Apostrophe is an example of incorrect use of the apostrophe.
So it must be more than one greengrocer and is therefore incorrect. Which is correct.

The Greengrocer's Apostrophe is an eponymous example of that thing.
It's wrong because it refers to more than one greengrocer. Therefore it is a correct example of a wrongly-used apostrophe.
