Lost my no.2 reefing line at the weekend up the inside of the boom - I think there's a sliding pulley sheeve the line doubles over. Looks impossible to recover but sure some of your furumites can help or explain.
Many thanks in much anticipation.

Sound like a shuttle block-if its single line reefing you may have one of these inside the boom-helps with the friction. If you look at the selden site they may have a diagram that explains.

As to how you recover either get busy with a bent coat hanger or similar & a mousing line or give your friendly rigger a call. I normally try the former for about 20mins then give up in disgust & make the call....

If you are in Portsmouth/Hamble i can give you the name of someone who may be able to help-PM me.

I did the same a couple of years ago. After wasting a lot of time trying to mouse it through, I eventually took the boom home, drilled out the boom outer end rivets and took it all apart.

Other than being able to reeve the line again, I was also able to check the blocks at the same time.

Re-riveting was done with new monel rivets - and back to the boat......with knots in the ends of the reefing lines!!

Hi Phillip,

Yep, did exactly the same as you on a couple of friend's boats. Removing one end-fitting or the other (found the clew end best) is relatively simple and re-reeving easy. However, when re-fitting the casting, we tapped threads in the rivet holes in the casting and used s/s bolts bedded in silicone instead. This enables the casting to be removed at any time with the aid of a small spanner. Did my own boat the same way before we set off cruising.

Really useful if you're cruising and don't carry a riveter capable of pulling 6mm rivets. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Just a thought,

Cheers Jerry

While you have the end of the boom, check the little wheels on the internal cars. They can easily be lost and they break from time to time, especialy if you use a winch to reef. I picked a tip up on here some time ago and replaced the wheels with short lengths of slit plastic microbore central heating pipe. Now there is nothing to break and the cars run just as smoothly as before.
