The out haul on my Selden boom (1989) is getting scruffy. I want to replace it. Am I right in thinking that the inboard end boom fitting which is heavily riveted on needs to come off the get to the fixed end of the out haul. If this is so, what a c**p design! Somebody, please tell me there's a simple solution.

Sorry, need more information. The outhaul on my Selden boom is a length of rope that attaches to the clew connection, which slides in a track on the boom. The rope can simply be drawn through the two sheaves to replace. What are you trying to do?

The following is tentative, because I haven't actually replaced my outhaul, but I think that, if you have a two part outhaul, you do need to remove one end-piece. The Selden literature that I have provides little information other than a cut-away, but I think that the outhaul pulley will pass the reefing travellers. In this case it may be simpler to remove the aft end-piece. I did this, in situ, a while ago to recover an errant reefing line. It was not too much of a job to drill out four 6mm rivets. To replace, I used 6mm pan head SS screws and nuts, with nylon washers, since setting rivets of this size needs a hefty rivetter.
Having said all this, someone will no doubt come up with an easy way!

My out haul has a wire strop from the clew into the mast where it has a turning block attached. The rope part enters the front of the boom , goes through the turning block and comes back to the front of the boom where it is attached to something that I cannot see. I've removed the outer end fitting which is attached by 2 machine screws but even with a good torch I can't make out the the attachment point of the rope end. Others have confirmed what I suspected and will have to remove the other end.

You don't have to remove the other end - you can do it from the aft end of the boom. The rope end is secured to the outhaul block. If you download the "Outhaul block replacement kit" manual from here, you'll see a diagram of what's inside the boom together with instructions on how to get the outhaul block out.
