Just filling in the online application form for my ships radio licence and it's asking if I want a 'Selcall' number? Is this an MMSI number in a different name?
Surely, ANALOGUE? .... It sent tones just like your touch-tone telephone .... OK, semantics. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Long obsolete anyway.
No, Selcall was a series of Analogue DTMF tones sent by the transmitter which when Rx'd deactivated the squelch defeat on the receiver.
Widely used in land mobile radio during the seventies and eighties..along with CTCSS which did the same thing but used single sub-audible tones...still in use on PMR446.
DSC..is the same thing but sent as a stream of digital info...enabling much longer and more compex codes...and about 20 times more info to be sent in the same time of data burst.
MMSI number is all you require.
