I can't find the original thread now, but read all of the replies, and thank you to everybody who replied to my original post.
I'll try the soaking in diesel first and, if that doesn't work, I'll try more extreme measures such as heating.

Usually sizing acually means gauling. I think thats the term; its when the material actually causes a small lump to appear within the threads and so rotatonal forces causes the lump of material to melt and weld the outer and inner together. Lubrication is no longer an option.

Just hope its pessimism on my part.
 
Galling normally refers specifically to stainless steels. The original question asks re galvanised fittings, so they are probably rusted solid. Brute force, heat or lubrication will probably solve it. I agree, though, galled fittings are usually scrap.
