Just doing some passage planning with my Reeds Channel Almanac and shocked to discover that it is no longer the same distance from Needles to Alderney as it is to Cherbourg.

Looked back at a previous edition just to check that my recollection had nothing to do with over-winter cobwebs on the brain and no.

Previously:
Needles L Ho to Cherbourg - 63nm
Needles L Ho to Braye - 62

Now:
Needles L Ho to Cherbourg - 63nm
Needles L Ho to Braye - 71

Similar results for St Peter Port and St Helier. Even St Malo has receded by a couple of miles.

I'm surprised this kind of seismic activity didn't set off a massive tsunami. Better set off an hour earlier, hadn't I?:rolleyes:

Without a chart in front of me, I'm pretty sure the direct distance from The Needles to Cherbourg and to Braye is about the same. It looks like the distance to Alderney has been measured in statute miles not nautical miles.
