See-through fuel filters

I am considering modfying my deisel CAV type pre-filter/water seperator to take a Racor spin-on cartridge filter and would like to use one with a see-through bulb, to monitor presence of water/sluge etc. However, seem to remember reading that, see-through polymer bowls are not recomended for boats due to fire risk. Does anyone know if this is the case ?

I think they changed the rules recently. I've always had (and still have) glass, don't intend to change. Possibly you may be inspected/excluded in a canal etc?

I have the same, on this boat and the previous two, great early indicator of a problem. Bill.

They are fine for use on coded boats, I have a glass one and I have petrol, no problems

See-through is fine with a diesel engine.

I Think that the CAV is actually PYREX and therefore heat resistant but it will still chip if not fitted correctly

That's what I have. I am not worried about the plastic seperator. If there was a fire on board severe enough to melt that I think I would either be dead or have left the boat in some haste.

Boat safety scheme requires metal bowls. There is a RACOR filter with see-through bowl which is approved by BSS as it has a metal heat shield, If you dont need boat safety cert then you can do what you like
