Sedan 36 calorifer element

I'm pretty sure the element in the calorifer is kaput and keeps tripping my shore power.

I can't for the life of me figure out how to get it out. It is mounted in the top and there is about 8 inches of clearance to the under side of the deck. The air con unit and water tank are either side to tilting it is not an option.

I have no idea what model of element it is so can't gauge the length. I think my only option is to cut a hole in the deck and put a water tight hatch in it.

Before I get busy with the jigsaw, any forum expertise greatly recieved!

A photo would help. Remember that the threaded base of the element is way bigger than the element itself - so you might find that once unscrewed you can tilt it over enough to get it out (although this is a bit guesswork without knowing the exact arrangement).

So the element doesnt go down the full length of the calorifer then?

Yours sounds different to mine, as ours has the heating element towards the bottom of the calorifier going in sideways. If you have to do major works, rather than cut an access hatch through the cockpit floor, i would remove the calorifier sideways out and up out through the lazarette.

Once the thread is out the element should tip to allow withdrawal and 8" might well be enough. I had to cut a hole in my corvette internal deck to replace my element. Spanners available for a few quid on Ebay. Lower wattage 1000 or 1500 w are more effective than household 3kw, but the latter are a lot cheaper.

Mine was 11" long but after undoing the thread which is say 1/2" deep or so it tilts dramatically sideways so id say if you have 8" above then you will get it out but a pic would be good.

Thought i would close out this thread with a big thankyou for the comments. Everyone was spot on. It was 11" long and with a bit of tilting came out fine. I bought a special wrench to go over the massive nut. Only a few quid but made the job a breeze. I watched youtubes of people going at them with blow torches to get them to release. Didnt fancy that!

No more shore power trips and plenty of hot water.
