Can anyone suggest a reputable dealer in second hand outboard engines in the Kent / Sussex area please ?

I recently bought a Merry Fisher 645 (21ft) which has a spring loaded auxiliary engine bracket fitted. I am seriously considering fitting something like a 5Hp outboard as an emergency back up. The main outboard is a Yamaha 115 HP

Any suggestions on Brand, Size etc will be greatly appreciated as always

Many thanks in advance

Hallo Len, hope all's well. FWIW, if just as an emergency backup to get you back to shore or suchlike, a 6-8hp longshaft would probably do the biz, with a saildrive prop maybe. I expect someone with more experience will be along shortly.

Ho, ho, just reading back over our trip with the Bavaria, Brighton to Shoreham....I don't thiink we would have tried that THIS week!
Incidentally, we've made the move to power ourselves last year, but I think this'll only be for about 5 years, then back to sail, but who knows? regards Ian.

Although not in your requested area, BillHigham Marine has a good reputation and has a wide choice to choose from. I'm sure delivery would not be an issue. Should point out no connection, just they were recommended to me when i was looking for an outboard.

As mentioned, for an auxillary you would want longshaft and i would think anywhere in the 6 - 10hp range would suffice. From the above link, the honda 6hp would be a good example. If you have to remove the auxillary engine often then i would go for a two stroke as the difference in weight compared to the four strokes is very noticeable.

Bill Highman will charge absolutely the highest price he thinks he can get away with. Used him once for something I couldn't obtain elsewhere, I gearbox I think. Runs out of an old church full of junk engines.

I prefer Lee Fairweather, used him for 20 years and always fair.

What ever you fit make sure the prop is below the transom in clean water or you just won't go anywhere.

Regards to all

p.s. Ian I thought it WAS like this week-or at least seemed to be at the time !

I have bought engines from Bill Higham and put 2 engines in part exchange. In fact with one of them I was given more for it than I bought it for off ebay.
Although one engine I bought from him was a bit dear there were 4 advantages.
1. He had the type I wanted in stock.
2. He did give a bit of a guarantee.
3. He was fitting it on the back of an old Bayliner and "Fitted/Installed" it FREE. Whereas another Outboard dealer wanted £200 to fit the engine.
4. He took 2 engines in PX against the one I was buying so "cash Flow" was less.

I would use him again.

If I had a MF 645 I would try and buy a second hand 2 stroke due to weight
PS. I had a 6.6m boat and had a 9.9 auxiliary on the back. At maximum revs it would only do 2 knots. (but there was drag from the inboard propeller whereas your 115 would lift up)

If I had a well maintained Yammie 115 I'd make sure the extra was prepared for long time storage. You might never ever need it.

I can't recommend a source, but would recommend the Yamaha 8hp 2-stroke as a pre-owned unit. It's the same weight of the 6hp, so well worth the extra 2 horses. It's really quite a light engine at about 27kg and being a twin it won't vibrate your mount to pieces either. And 2-strokes are much easier to store and service. As suggested, look at a high thrust prop.

BHG in Lymington have an ex-display 6 hp Yamaha in stock, and they're having a clearance at the moment so it may be worth a cheeky offer. It's the old grey colour, not the new white one, so would match nicely with your big outboard. I think they have a 4 as well.
