Help!! My Shipman 28 has its original Yanmar YSE8, unfortunately it has recently been diagnosed as dead - deader than dead! The boat is really not worth the £4-5K that it would cost for a new engine so I am looking for 2nd hand or reconditioned. So far everyone I have spoken to has used the term hens teeth when discussing decent options. Although I have been offered a Volvo Penta 2002 which is apparently not great at cold starts.

Any advice, thoughts or other would be most welcome.

I was talking to the chap who services my Yanmar YSE8 in Brightlingsea about replacing it with new or reconditioned and his words about reconditioned were you would be buying someone elses problems. He said he could install and Bukh 10hp for about £3.5k last autumn. I am hoping to be able to hold out one more season before I replace the engine - it is the original from '72 so hasn't done badly.

Surely a Shipman 28 is worth more than £4 - 5k?

I used a Volvo 2002 for 15 years without starting problems, including sailing to the end of October. Some of them had hand-start capability, which was quite useful, if only to give the engine a few turns before starting.

I have a YSE8 complete installation in good running order available. It was removed last May from a Cobra 750 orriginally to replace shaft and stern bearing and but wife suggested replacing with a bigger engine so who was I to refuse the suggestion.
