Before letting go lines ... what do you do, how much real checking do you do, do you stow everytheing properly, is SWMBO / partner busy down below when it's cast off and go .... etc.

(Previous poll was set to start on submission - but it was changed during its submission and 7 hrs got added to the start time by Forum system somehow ????)

i think it all depends on circumstances.

departing for a channel crossing in fresh conditions with a crew some of whom are unfamiliar with your boat would require a lot more preperation than motoring half a mile in calm conditions to anchor and sunbathe for a few hours.

In my situation we motor half a mile to the locks to get out into the channel then spend at least 10 minutes in the locks so if pushed for time a lot can be done while waiting.

One thing that I can never understand is people who motor out of a sheltered harbour then struggle in the sea and swell to remove fenders sail covers etc.I allways try to do as much as possible in the harbour.

i notice that you havent included any navigation preparation in the list.Especially if I am single handed I try to get a few things marked on the chart ,tide times and waypoints done in advance.

I must admit to not allways following my own advise though /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

You have omitted the legal requirement for a passage plan, even if you are moving from one side of the harbour to the other. You know - times of HW, hazards, tidal streams, weather, etc., etc.

Now now .... Tectona is long gone !!

And I stopped all that when I left ships !! Passage Plans that no-one read except the writer !!

PC / eTrex .....

Ok smartarse .... just because you went out and spent on a Garmin plotter ...... to navigate way out of Ryde Hbr !!

Re: Shooooooosh !!!!

Is there something Jim & Nigel are not telling us?

Re: Shooooooosh !!!!

Now that would be telling ..... !!! All MAY be revealed for those keen-eyed at Cherbourg !!!!

Slowly evolving ...

Seems that many are actually well organised ....

I sit that most answers are from Sail or is it a good split mobo and sail ??

VERY interesting ...

That some are actually owning up to stowing the beer / wine first !!!

I have a suspicion that there may be a bit of 'correctness' in some of the answers ... as there is an overwhelming %age who give safety briefings ...

I watch some go out from marina's and they mostly seem to board, stow gear and not long after are seen chugging out ...

My intention for the Cherbourg trip is to try the briefing route ... as I for one admit that I rarely do it ... I usually say ... watch this - as this is how to start the engine ... radio here and battery switch. Rest is as required ...... once departed ..

I have to admit that often I am very tight on time as my berth is drying pontoon and I only have a short interval to get off ... and often I am going to another similar tidal destination .... ie. Hayling to Newport ............ with only maximum 4 - 5 hrs to do it ....

So as I originally said ... I will give my system ...

If time is available .. I will point out bits on the boat ... and a start engine display, radio here, gas bottle and other bits. Will help pass gear down and then leave swmbo etc. to stow gear while I remove sail covers etc.
I normally single up lines so that we have minimum ready for when swmbo / others are ready to do the honours ... in fact it's not unknown for me to let go on my own and then others to come up to see marina disapearing in distance ....

Yes - I admit to a bit of a casual attitude to it all ... and that who comes on can learn or not learn as they want ... I often hand over the tiller and say - hold that will you while I sort etc. keeping an eye on them and giving a hint here and there ... soon I find even the most reluctant get a grin on their face and want to keep the tiller !! I believe in the gentle nudge system ... not the full frontal - Now here is lesson #1 etc. People learn at different pace and for me - I enjoy helming or sheeting ... for me being on the boat is the important bit ... I can honestly say that I probably helm my boat about 20% of the time she is sailing ... other 80% is by others on board .... and that is split probably 50 - 50 them and autohelm ....

Boating is to enjoy .... the last refuge where you can escape ....
