Second ignition switch

I have dual helm positions on my boat but only the inside one has an engine ignition switch.I would like to install another switch outside but my electrical knowledge is quite basic.Do I have to run a new set of wiring to the battery and starter,or can I tap into the existing wiring?

whats the engin type and dose it have a manufacturers bord or a home made job?

it's a Yanmar and the board was fitted by the yard so I guess it's the manufacturers' one

Just continue the wires from the existing switch to the new one

You can wire a second switch in parallel to the first. That means taking the wires from the new switch back to the terminals of the original one, without breaking the wiring of the original switch.

The snag will be that you have to make sure both switches are off before the ignition circuit can be switched off.

If you just want to start and stop the engine from the second position, simply fit start and stop buttons rather than another key switch.
