Steel--not classed as old. I bought a steel yacht last year which was built in 1992 and surveyor classed it as still a young one! Mind you it depends how the steel was treated/painted during building.
GRP. Could have Osmosis problems, unless previously been treated.
Timber. If looked after and maintained a timber boat can last for years.
Always ask for a surveyors report before buying.
I;m sure a few others on this site will add to my comments.
welcome
no is the answer
mainly depends in what condition a vessel is kept in, my boat built in 1979 & i bought her in 1999 from the first owner & she is really in superb condition.
i have spent a "few bob" since up-grading equipment.
we dont have all the accomodation of a more recient vessel but she sails better than many newer boats & not as "tippy" + a" head turner" when entering, port
( especially when we cock-it-up) & only 37 built.
good hunting
We need to know a bit more background really. My GRP boat is 33 years old this year but needs painting now. Depending on your budget and willingness / ability to undertake a bit of DIY, there's no reason why you shouldn't buy a 15 year old boat - I'd still think of it as fairly new! Also, if it's a 1990 racing boat, it might well need a new mast, rigging & sails. It really depends what sort of life it's had and how well it's been looked after.
Thanks guys its a bayliner GRp hull with new Profile(?) and Graphics(?) The seller has told me it has a new engine as the old one blew up last year. I am off to check it out tomorrow and it could be my first ever boat purchase
Hmmmm, I wonder if <hull with new Profile> means it has been faired to hide all the repairs and dings, then, < and Graphics> a new coat of jam complete with some pretty pictures.
Well I hope the answer is no. I bought a 1977 boat last year. I looked at many boats from the 70s (low budget) and most of them were in great condition, many with the original engines still going strong, and only 1 (of about 30) had signs of osmosis.
Just get a survey done, although I'm sure it wouldn't turn up much on such a young boat.
If it's any help I have a 1990 Bayliner and it's an excellent boat. However that has nothing neccessarily to do with either age, make or model, but more to do with how well it's been mantained.
Mine has the original engine and in 6 years I've had no problems with it at all.
